Adam knew that he was ready to ask for Abbey’s hand in marriage before he contacted me, he just was not sure of how he wanted to do it. We mulled over several ideas. Adam initially inquired about proposing at Maroon Bells near Aspen, CO but the main road in to the park is closed until late May most years. We discussed a spot near Nederland called Lake Isabelle. Adam explained to me that this trail was very special to the two of them. I packed my dog up and headed to scout this location. Unfortunately, we learned after we arrived, that road too was snow covered and would be too long a hike for a marriage proposal. I suggested to Adam that we use Mayflower Gulch as it offers breath taking views of the Ten Mile Range and Fletcher Mountain.
Our plan was for Adam and Abbey to make an Easter Day hike. They would go to church that morning in Denver and then head up to mountains. They arrived on time and got straight to hiking. I have to tell you, I was not expecting them to hike SO fast. My plan was to make sure they got on the right trail. I gave them a five minute head start and then I jumped in my skis and started skinning up. I was sure that I would catch them in less than 10 minutes. After almost skinning half the trail I was getting worried. What if they beat me to the location?
Just about half way up I caught up to them. I was making a bee line for the top after I passed them. I knew that they would be only minutes behind me. I dropped off a yellow Nalgene bottle as Adam’s maker and quickly got into the trees just as the two were coming into sight. I got my camera out and this is what I saw….
