Backcountry Marriage Proposal at Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park

How this marriage proposal planning started

Christopher contacted me after he saw some of my marriage proposal photographs on his buddy’s Facebook page. Christopher had an upcoming trip planned to Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park with his girlfriend (spoiler alert: now fiancée) and he wanted to propose. Having never been to Colorado before Christopher needed my help in determining which trail would be best. I explained that in May the weather is completely unpredictable and we would have to play things by ear. I did some online research and narrowed down his choices to three different trails inside the park.

Christopher and I had made a plan. I would scout the hike up to Mills Lake. If it looked good I would send him photos of what to expect. If I did not like what I found on that trail we would use Dream Lake instead. I arrived at RMNP the day before his proposal and set out to scout the trail. It was raining on the trailhead but that quickly changed over to snow. It was snowy so hard that by the time I turned around to backtrack my footprints had been covered in fresh snow. I took a couple of pics before I left knowing that Christopher would just have to trust my judgment about the next day’s weather forecast of blue skies.

That night I sent Christopher my scouting report along with a couple of snapshots. I literally had to draw in the mountains as you could see noting but snow falling in the photos. I told him that there were a couple of turns along the trail that he would have to be careful. I did not want to leave things to chance so I told him that I would leave pink marker tape in the trees for him to follow.

Getting to the spot

The next day everything started out as planned. I left pink marker tape in the trees and Christopher & Tatjana got on the trail on schedule. One part of this plan that I did not take into consideration. I had these two hiking through some of the most gorgeous scenery in all of Rocky Mountain National Park. I did not think about how many times they would want to stop and take pics. HAHA! Needless to say it took them an hour longer to reach my yellow Nalgene water bottle marker (left out so Christopher knew the exact spot to drop to one knee). As they came to Mills Lake shoreline this is what I capture from my hidden location…

Christopher drops to one knee while Tatjana is admiring the magical Rocky Mountains surrounding her. She does not know he is about to propose marriage.
